Mustek UK-BASED BUZZSOFT SECURES GLOBAL REACH THROUGH TAIWANESE MANUFACTURING GIANT
BuzzSoft Limited, a UK-based software company based at Gretna Green, is today (Friday 9 June) preparing for swift global growth following the signing of a significant bundling distribution contract with Taiwan-based Mustek, the world’s leading supplier of scanners.

BuzzSoft’s products, a wide range of easy-to-use home and business software applications designed for the PC scanner and Internet, will now be included on the set-up CD of the Mustek scanner package, sales of which account for a 20% share of the global scanner market.

With Mustek’s planned production of circa 6,000,000 units in 2000, the deal sees BuzzSoft’s products, which have until now been sold through direct marketing and a dedicated web site, reaching a much broader global audience. It is estimated that for each 1% of Mustek users who upgrade their BuzzSoft product, the company will generate a revenue stream of approximately £500,000.

As part of the deal, BuzzSoft has also included its own innovative e-commerce software for use on the Mustek web site, allowing simultaneous on-line transactions to take place in 14 different languages, using over 30 different currencies and providing five different payment options, making it significantly easier for the consumer to make a purchase.

While Mustek benefits from the deal by providing added value to its customer base and generating a lucrative revenue stream from a share in all BuzzSoft software upgrades and associated purchases, its customers benefit from a free package of software, with full versions of the BuzzSoft products, providing an easy-to-use single source for scanner, camera and other imaging software. BuzzSoft currently has a further range of software applications in development, to which Mustek users will have early access.

The deal was facilitated by BuzzSoft’s newly appointed director of operations in Taiwan, Eric De Ruvo, liaising with a number of trade bodies including Scottish Trade International, Trade Partners UK (formerly British Trade International), the Scottish Export Assistance Scheme in the UK and the British Trade & Cultural office in Taiwan.

Francis Hilton, chief executive of BuzzSoft Limited commented: “This type of bundling deal is hugely significant in the evolution of BuzzSoft as a global software supplier. It is essential for companies like ourselves, who have a large output capability but work from a small base, to liaise with UK trade bodies to form close partnerships with large organisations if we want to see our products succeed on a global level”. “On completion of our latest funding deal in February this year, we said that we would use the capital to fuel our expansion, specifically in terms of an increase in our international trade capabilities. The successful completion of this contract is as a direct result of BuzzSoft having the means to back up these ambitions, and we intend the Mustek deal to be the forerunner for many similar partnerships.”

Barry Nicholson, responsible for the Taiwan desk at Trade Partners UK, added: “As well as the support which BuzzSoft received from organisations such as Trade Partners UK, much credit is due to their hard work and persistence in driving this lucrative contract forward between what is a relatively small UK company and a major Taiwanese manufacturer”. “The deal highlights the growth of partnerships between companies in Taiwan and the UK, particularly in the software sector, and we hope to have further announcements of this type to make in the near future.”
