| UK SOFTWARE COMPANY JOINS TWAIN |
| The British software company BuzzSoft
Ltd has moved into the Computer Industry's 'Premier League' by being invited to
join the TWAIN organisation as an Associate Member. TWAIN, the standard which defines how PCs and Windows applications communicate with imaging devices such as scanners and digital cameras, is managed by an association of seven companies: Kodak, Adobe, Fujitsu, Ricoh, Xerox, Digimarc and JFL. Although Buzzsoft does not manufacture scanners, it does produce software that enhances their use. One of its most popular products enables a scanner to work as a photocopier. Another of its products uses a scanner to feed information on a business card directly into a database. Because of the expertise that the Company has developed in this field BuzzSoft has now been invited by the TWAIN organisation to become involved in developing the specification of the TWAIN standard. Hewlett-Packard and three American software companies are also Associate Members of TWAIN. Effectively, BuzzSoft is one of a team of only a dozen companies world-wide involved in this work. "Being invited to develop the TWAIN standard is strategically important for us in the imaging industry," said BuzzSoft's Chief Technology Officer, Robert Jones, "It recognises the skills we possess in this area and our efforts to work with international companies involved in manufacturing imaging products." When scanners were first introduced they were relatively simple devices that only worked in black and white. The TWAIN standard had to be modified to take colour into account. Now digital cameras comply to the TWAIN standard but these have additional controls to those of a scanner. "As the specification moves forward it becomes bigger and encompasses more devices," explained Jones, "The improvements we make will not cause you to throw away your existing scanner. |
